About Us

The Benjamin and Mary Siddons Measey Foundation is a Private Foundation founded in 1957 by William Maul Measey, a Philadelphia lawyer, astute investor and philanthopist.

Mr. Measey was a 1898 graduate of the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania.

In keeping with its charitable purpose, the Foundation seeks to support the broad field of medical education in the Philadelphia region. While the Foundation devotes a substantial portion of its giving to fund scholarships for medical schools and fellowships for continued medical education, it also seeks to support innovative programs and projects at area medical schools.

Grants

Grants are awarded primarily to Philadelphia area medical schools on an annual basis for scholarships and fellowships. Grants are also awarded to fund endowed professorships for tenured faculty, and innovative programs and projects which directly benefit medical students, residents, post-graduate degree candidates and junior faculty members at area medical schools. Almost without exception, the Foundation does not award grant monies to cover overhead and salaries.

Examples of Previous Grants

In addition to awarding monies for scholarships and post-graduate fellowships at medical schools in the Philadelphia region, the Foundation has also supported:

Scholarships at pre-med program at Bryn Mawr College.
Scholarships at medical schools in this region for M.D. / Ph.D. programs.
Support for younger faculty pursuing careers in “medical education.”
Endowment of Professorships for tenured faculty in various academic Departments.
Simulation Centers in Departments of Surgery.
An “Ultrasound” teaching laboratory.
Initiatives in programming to improve “medical education.”
Support for a program to improve the delivery and quality of medical care.
Support for a “bridge funding” proposal to increase the opportunity for junior faculty members to continue careers in medical education.

Typically, programs or projects are of one to three years duration and are not renewable.

PROCESS

Grants are awarded by the Foundation after review and approval by the Board of Managers. Applications for grants should be submitted by the Dean or the interested Department Head or Chair at the applying medical school. Applications by individual professors, without the support of the Dean or the Department Head or Chair, are strongly discouraged. Applications from Offices of Development are also accepted.

SUBMISSION

Each application should contain:

(1) a detailed description of the program or project for which funding is sought, including the total cost of the program or project, the identity of other funding sources, and the specific amount of money requested from the Foundation,

(2) the name(s) of the faculty member(s) responsible the implementation of the program or project and a summary of his or her credentials,

(3) an itemized budget showing how grant monies will be spent, and including monies received from other sources of funding, (4) a description of the plan to evaluate the success of the program or project, and

(5) a statement as to how the grant monies, if awarded, will benefit “medical education” in the Philadelphia region.

Grant Applications are considered by the Foundation at its quarterly meetings. To allow time for fair consideration by the Board, applications must be received by:
